FAQs About Selling Private Number Plates

How long will it take to sell my number plate?

While some private number plates sell within days, the average sale can take anywhere from a few weeks to several months. The exact timing depends on demand, pricing, and current market trends. To speed up the process, we actively market your plate to collectors; however, if an asking price is unrealistic, a sale may not be achievable.

Can I sell my private number plate?

Yes, you can sell a private number plate provided you own the rights. The requirements differ depending on whether the plate is currently on a vehicle or a certificate:

1. If on a vehicle:

  • The V5C (Logbook) must not state “non-transferable registration mark.”
  • The vehicle must be taxed (or tax-exempt) and have a valid MOT.
  • You must be the registered keeper or have their full permission.

2. If on a retention certificate:

  • Your V750 (Entitlement) or V778 (Retention) document must be valid and in-date.
  • You must be the listed grantee/purchaser or have their written authority to sell.
Can you sell a car with a private number plate?

Yes, but the plate stays with the car. If you sell a vehicle with a private registration still assigned, ownership of that plate transfers to the buyer.

To keep your plate, you must apply to take it off (retain it) via the DVLA before you hand over the keys. Once the plate is on a Retention Document (V778), you can safely sell the car while keeping your private registration for future use.

I sold my vehicle with the private registration still on it - can I get it back?

Legally, if you transfer ownership of a vehicle before placing the plate on retention, the registration mark transfers to the new keeper automatically. The DVLA cannot intervene once the V5C (logbook) has been processed.

Your options are:

  • Contact the buyer: If you have an amicable relationship, ask them to transfer the plate back to you. They will need to apply for a V778 Retention Document first.
  • Private Agreement: Hopefully, you have a written sales agreement stating the plate was not included in the sale, which can help in a civil dispute.

Tip: Always ensure the plate is held on a retention certificate before handing over the keys to avoid this situation.

Can I list a number plate for sale on someone else's behalf?

Yes, you can sell a private plate for someone else, such as a friend or family member. However, the legal owner (the Registered Keeper on the V5C or the Grantee/Purchaser on the retention certificate) must provide their full consent.

To ensure a secure and legal transfer, we are required to speak directly with the legal owner to confirm they are happy to proceed before a sale is finalised.

Can I sell my number plate privately?

Yes, you can sell your private number plate privately, but it requires handling the legal transfer yourself. Using a specialist agency like ourselves ensures the DVLA transfer is secure, protects you from payment fraud, and increases buyer exposure - often resulting in a higher final sale price.

I have found a buyer myself, can you help me with the sales process?

Yes, we offer a professional sales administration service for private finds. If you have already found a buyer, we can act as an intermediary to manage the secure payment and DVLA transfer documents on your behalf.

This provides both you and the buyer with the peace of mind that the funds are handled safely and the registration is transferred correctly. We will agree a fixed fee for this service, which is typically deducted from the final sale proceeds.

Can I sell my number plate back to the DVLA?

No, the DVLA does not buy back private registrations. While the DVLA sells new registrations through their own website and auctions, they do not purchase previously issued plates from owners.

Once a registration is in circulation, it can only be sold on the private market. To find a buyer, you must either list it privately or use a specialist agency like ourselves to handle the marketing, security, and legal transfer for you.

Do you add fees on top of my asking price?

It is completely free for sellers to list and sell a registration through us. You receive your full agreed asking price with no hidden deductions.

We do have to apply the standard Government fees and a service fee (among the lowest in the industry) to cover the cost of marketing and legal administration to the final sales price - this will be paid by the buyer.

Our "Price Preview" Feature:
When listing your plate, you can use our preview tool to adjust your price and to see exactly what a buyer will pay including all fees. This helps you ensure your plate remains competitively priced while guaranteeing you get the exact amount you want in your pocket.

How do you keep my information secure?

We take your privacy seriously, using encrypted systems and adhering to strict UK data protection regulations to safeguard your personal information.

Our Professional Accreditations:

  • ICO Registered: We are regulated by the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO no. Z9704649).
  • FCA Authorised: Authorised by the Financial Conduct Authority (FRN: 734204) to offer consumer finance.
  • DVLA Registered: We are an official DVLA registered number plate supplier (Supplier no: 3166).

Your data is never shared or sold to third parties without your explicit consent.

What if I change my mind or want to increase my price?

You are free to withdraw your listing or amend your asking price at any time, provided there is no ongoing enquiry or a sale already agreed. Simply contact our team to make these changes.

However, if we secure a buyer and you agree to the sale but later withdraw or fail to provide the required documents within the agreed time scale, a cancellation fee applies. This covers our administration, advertising, and partial loss of commission (AALOC), as outlined in our Terms and Conditions.

Can you contact investors and collectors for rare number plates?

Yes. For premium or high-value registrations we can discreetly approach our exclusive network of private collectors and investors to generate serious offers from high-net-worth buyers who are actively looking for investment-grade number plates.

My car was scrapped or written off, can I get my private plate back?

Yes, but only if you act before the vehicle is destroyed or the insurance claim is settled. Once an insurer pays out for a total loss, they technically become the owner of the vehicle and the registration mark.

To save your plate, you must:

  • Inform your insurance company immediately that you wish to retain the plate.
  • Apply to the DVLA to retain the registration (submitting Form V317) before the car is scrapped.
  • Ensure the vehicle is still "identifiable" (has not yet been crushed).

If the vehicle has already been destroyed or the claim settled without a retention application, the rights to the number plate are usually lost. For official guidance, visit GOV.UK.

My Retention Certificate has expired, can I still renew it?

Legally, if a V778 or V750 certificate expires, you lose the rights to the registration and the pre-paid £80 transfer fee. The DVLA generally does not offer a grace period for late renewals.

Is there anything you can do?

  • Contact the DVLA immediately: Call them on 0300 790 6802 to discuss your situation. In very rare circumstances they may consider a late application.
