Most people are unaware of age restrictions, and we understand that other websites can sometimes be unclear about the rules (or not even mention them), so that’s why Plates4Less have developed a new tool that can check whether the private number plate you want is suitable for the intended vehicle!
Most registration marks carry an age identifier and, to prevent fraudsters from making their vehicle appear younger than it really is, newer registrations cannot be assigned or transferred to older vehicles.
But don’t worry, you can always put an older mark on a newer vehicle, and some registrations (such as those released before 1963 and Northern Irish registrations) don’t carry age identifiers at all and can be used on suitable vehicles of any age.
To help you find a registration that is suitable for your vehicle*, we have created our Vehicle Age Checker, which will show you whether or not a registration mark is able to be assigned onto your vehicle.*Please note - if your vehicle already bears a non-original registration mark that has been transferred to it since it was first registered, then the tool’s result will not relate to your vehicle, but to the age of that mark instead. It is then best to use your V5C vehicle log book (or registration document) to check the true age of your vehicle.
We have also created a handy guide for you, which explains how to use the tool, and why UK number plates carry age identifiers. To use it you will first need to know the registration mark currently on the vehicle and our tool works by selecting the date your vehicle was first registered from a drop-down menu, then showing you which registrations are suitable by displaying a green tick or a red cross.
Our tool is built into many pages of our website page - making it easy to check that a registration is suitable for your vehicle, without losing the registration that you want to order. You can find our tool by clicking on the Check Your Vehicle Age button.
