Find GuideA brief history of number plates

The UK number plate system was introduced in late 1903, with the registration 'A1' (issued in London) debatably being the first. Registration marks would be issued in sequence and relate to the area in which they were issued. The number plate system has undergone many changes in the last 100 years. We have put together a brief guide for you below.

Find GuideNew Releases

The DVLA releases a new sequence of registration marks for sale to the public twice each year, in advance of the new car registration dates (scheduled for the 1st March and 1st September), for example, 07 registrations for cars registered after 1st March 2007 and 57 registrations for cars registered after 1st September 2007.

The public are invited to purchase the rights to these registration marks approximately 3 months in advance (usually in June and December each year), which can then be transferred later, only to vehicles registered on or after these new registration dates.

Once the release date has been confirmed such registrations will be listed on our website as ‘New – How to buy’ together with prices. You may then place your offer to acquire a registration mark through our site or over the telephone in the normal way. On the release date, your offer will be made to the Secretary of State for Transport for consideration, on a first come, first served basis.

Fillers

When you have chosen what you want your number plate to say, you may realise that you don’t have enough characters to fill the plate or that you cannot find an exact match. Using characters as ‘fillers’ is a great way to find a match and to create a distinctive looking plate. You can find some tips to help you below.

You can use letters as fillers by adding them at the beginning or end of words, or even in the middle.

Xs can be used as kisses and Ss and Zs can be added to the end of words to make them plural (e.g. GEMS) or possessive (e.g. GEM’Z)

Find GuideFrequently Asked Questions

Can I use GB registration marks on my Northern Irish registered vehicle?

The DVLA based here in Swansea are now administering the transfer assignments of all GB and Northern Ireland vehicle registration marks. The transfer process for customers in Northern Ireland is now exactly the same as that for customers in the mainland — Quicker, Simpler, and £180 Cheaper than in the past! So, if your vehicle is registered in Northern Ireland you can proceed to purchase any GB registration mark that is suitable for your vehicle at no extra cost!

My vehicle has a "Q" prefix registration number plate. Can it participate in the transfer and retention schemes and thus have a personalised plate transferred to it?

Unfortunately the answer is no. Vehicles are assigned "Q" prefix registration numbers to show that their origins or age are uncertain. "Q" numbers are therefore non-transferable and must remain with the vehicle unless documentary evidence which confirms its origins or age comes to the attention of the DVLA who may then choose to assign an age-related registration mark. If you find such documentary evidence for your Q plated vehicle then you should contact the DVLA, who may then assign a replacement age-related registration number plate to the vehicle. Once the DVLA authorise such a change and your vehicle is assigned a standard registration mark then your vehicle may have a personalised number plate assigned to it.

Can I buy a Q Plate and have it transferred to my vehicle?

Unfortunately the answer is no. The DVLA has decided that is not economically viable to offer Q prefix plates for sale or offer transfer facilities for owners of vehicles who already have Q plates assigned to their vehicles, due to the limited number of Q plated vehicles in existence. The Q plate is a consumer protection measure which allows the vehicle buyer to quickly and visually determine that the age and origins of a vehicle they may be considering buying, is uncertain. The DVLA wishes to retain this consumer protection measure and so such plates cannot be transferred to vehicle of known age or origin.

The registration that I want is not listed — can you find it for me?

Only DVLA will hold records on the vehicle and keeper history. Due to the Data Protection Act they are unable to disclose many details especially details on the previous or current keepers. DVLA enquiries can be contacted on 0300 790 6802. Alternatively, contact us on 01792 477316 and we will be happy to assist you with finding an alternative.

I used to own a registration mark — can I get it back?

If the vehicle was scrapped, stolen and not recovered, or 'written off' the registration mark will never be available again. If you sold the vehicle with the registration mark assigned to it, it is possible that it may become available in the future should the current owner decide to sell it. Only DVLA hold records on the vehicle and keeper history and, due to the Data Protection Act, they are unable to disclose many details especially details on the previous or current keepers. DVLA enquiries can be contacted on 0300 790 6802.

If you would like us to assist you with finding an alternative, please contact us on 01792 477316.
