If you take a look at the numberplates search
options (just use the "Find Number Plates"
link at the top of this page) the way they work
are as follows:-
The Wide Plate search is designed to let you search
for your plate by typing in three letters. These
could be your initials or a three letter word.
The important thing to remember is that the DVLA
doesn’t issue registration marks containing
the letter I or the letter Q, so you can’t
enter these letters. If you then click on the
search button and wait a few moments your results
will be shown together with the price of acquiring
the rights to display the plates on your vehicle.
The green ‘More Info’ button is very
important as it allows you to see the different
number plate transfer options together with the
value added tax and Department for Transport transfer fees.
If you can pay by
cheque or bank debit card as opposed to your credit
cards, we always offer a discount and so we show you how much you can save
by paying in these different ways. The More Info
button also lets you see if there is any transfer
restriction applied to the plates you have chosen.
Most of the cheaper number plates have a letter
or number called an age indicator so it’s
important that you don’t order a plate which
is younger than the vehicle you wish to put it
on as this transfer would not be allowed. You
can still buy your dream plate for transfer at
a later date, if that’s what you’d
like to do. You don’t even need a car or
other vehicle right now as we can supply the rights
to the registration mark on a DVLA certificate
for you to use later on.
The other two types of searches lead to the same
information but let you be more specific in choosing
the letters and numbers that you like.
