Q1: My vehicle has a "Q" prefix registration number plate. Can it participate in the transfer and retention schemes and thus have a personalised plate transferred to it?

Unfortunately the answer is no.
Vehicles are assigned "Q" prefix registration numbers to show that their origins or age are uncertain. "Q" numbers are therefore non-transferable and must remain with the vehicle unless documentary evidence which confirms its origins or age comes to the attention of the DVLA who may then choose to assign an age-related registration mark. If you find such documentary evidence for your Q plated vehicle then you should send it to your nearest DVLA Local Office who may then assign a replacement age-related registration number plate to the vehicle. Once the DVLA authorise such a change and your vehicle is assigned a standard registration mark then your vehicle may have a personalised number plate assigned to it. ...Top

Q2: What is a Q prefix DVLA Number plate and are they transferable?

Q prefix DVLA numberplates are assigned to any vehicle of which the age or origins are uncertain e.g. kit conversion vehicles which are built of major components from more than one donor vehicle, or imported vehicles where the date of first registration cannot be established. These plates are not transferable to other vehicles, even if they already carry Q prefixed DVLA plates. Also see the answer to previous question. ...Top

Q3: Can I buy a Q Plate and have it transfered to my vehicle?

Unfortunately the answer is no.
The DVLA has decided that is not economically viable to offer Q prefix plates for sale or offer transfer facilities for owners of vehicles who already have Q plates assigned to their vehicles, due to the limited number of Q plated vehicles in existence. The Q plate is a consumer protection measure which allows the vehicle buyer to quickly and visually determine that the age and origins of a vehicle they may be considering buying, is uncertain. The DVLA wishes to retain this consumer protection measure and so such plates cannot be transferred to vehicle of known age or origin....Top

Q4: What is a non-transferable number?

A non-transferable number is simply that - one which cannot be removed from the vehicle, on which it is assigned, for sale or transfer. Non-transferable marks will be indicated on a vehicle's V5C logbook usually directly below where the vehicle registration mark is printed on the document. You cannot therefore offer such a registration mark for sale. ...Top
