Registration is for someone else as a surprise gift : buying a vehicle that already has a private registration on it. (back to QNA start)
If you wish to transfer the mark onto a vehicle that currently has a personalised registration on it then you can either retain the current mark onto a government certificate or transfer it to another vehicle – at the same time. Either way the Registered Keeper will need to sign a form giving their authority so we suggest that you opt to complete the transfer at a later date. This way you can give the registration as a gift and then let the recipient finish off the transfer themselves- it’s easy!
When placing an order, complete the details as yourself. We will ask you for a 'Nominee' name (this is the name of who is to be the Registered Keeper of the vehicle).
Don’t worry- we know how to keep a secret, just select ‘it’s a surprise’ on your order form when asked. We’ll send all correspondence in plain envelopes so as not to ruin the surprise!
Transfer options explained
Self transfer service – we will send you an official government document called a Certificate of Entitlement (V750) with the legal rights to your new registration mark on it. This will take around 5 – 7 days to arrive and contain full instructions on how to complete your transfer. You or your nominee combine this with your vehicle documents and take or post everything to your local DVLA office.
The nominee will also need to complete an application called a V317 and either;
- Transfer the current registration onto another vehicle. There will be a government transfer fee of £80.
- Retain the current registration to an official Government Certificate V778. There will be a combined government transfer and certification fee of £105.

No, anyone can complete the transfer on their behalf as long as they have all the appropriate vehicle documents. Although The registered keeper of each vehicle involved will have to sign the V317 form.
What documents will I need to take to DVLA?
For this ransfer:
- The V750 certificate that we will send you.
- V5C Registration document(or completed ‘new keeper’s supplement’ with V62 form) when you receive it from the DVLA.
- MOT certificate (if applicable, i.e. more than 3 years since first registration)
- The V317form. Your DVLA vehicle office will have these in stock or we can send you one with your confirmation if you request it while you place your order.
- The same vehicle documents listed above.
- The £80.00 transfer fee- usually payable by cash or cheque.
- The V317form. Your DVLA vehicle office will have these in stock or we can send you one with your confirmation if you request it while you place your order.
- The £105.00 transfer fee- usually payable by cash or cheque.
How long do I have to do the transfer?
You will have 12 months to complete the transfer and this period can be extended if needs be. If you have not assigned the registration to a vehicle within 12 months from your purchase date then the certificate renewal will attract a DVLA fee and an administration fee to VRM Swansea. Currently the total renewal fee is £54.00- this will give you a further twelve months. Once the registration is assigned to a vehicle there are no further ongoing fees.
What if I don’t want to keep the current private registration mark?
You can forfeit the rights to the existing registration. The DVLA will request that you sign a brief letter stating this as once you’ve given it up you can not apply to reverse the process and get it back.
What happens to the old registration mark and numberplates?
What happens to the old registration mark and numberplates?
If you have the space, then keep the old plates because you will probably be able to re-instate the original registration when you come to change your vehicle in the future.

Done-For-You Transfer service – we will request that you or the nominee send us the vehicle documents. A member of our expert team will complete the transfer at Swansea DVLA Office to ensure the transfer is completed as quickly and accurately as possible saving you the time, expense and effort of a trip to your local vehicle office yourself. We will complete the additional forms for you but we will require the extra DVLA fee which depends on what you choose to do with the current registration;
- Transfer the current registration onto another vehicle. There will be a government transfer fee of £80.
- Retain the current registration to an official Government Certificate V778. There will be a combined government transfer and certification fee of £105.
If you can get hold of the documents without giving the surprise away then we can complete the transfer without the recipient knowing. If not then you can choose to complete the transfer at a later date. In this case we will send you an official Government document called a Certificate of Entitlement (V750). You can present this as a gift along with a letter from us explaining what documents the recipient needs to send back to us in order to complete their transfer.
