Registration is for yourself: have vehicle and the vehicle documents. (back to QNA start)
If you have the vehicle documents then the transfer can be completed straight away and all vehicle documents will be exchanged for ones that show the new registration mark.
Transfer options explained
Self transfer service - We will send you an official government document called a Certificate of Entitlement (V750) with the legal rights to your new registration mark on it. This will take around 5 – 7 days to arrive and contain full instructions on how to complete your transfer. You combine this with your vehicle documents and either take or post everything to your local DVLA office. If you go in person your transfer can normally be completed while you wait.

What documents will I need to take to DVLA?
- The V750 certificate that we will send you.
- V5C Registration document
- MOT certificate (if applicable, i.e. more than 3 years since first registration)
How long do I have to do the transfer?
You will have 12 months to complete the transfer and this period can be extended if needs be. If you have not assigned the registration to a vehicle within 12 months from your purchase date then the certificate renewal will attract a DVLA fee and an administration fee to VRM Swansea. Currently the total renewal fee is £54.00- this will give you a further twelve months. Once the registration is assigned to a vehicle there are no further ongoing fees.
What happens to the old registration mark and numberplates?
If you have the space, then keep the old plates because you will probably be able to re-instate the original registration when you come to change your vehicle in the future.
Done-For-You Transfer service - We will send you a confirmation requesting that you send us your vehicle documents. A member of our expert team will complete the transfer at Swansea DVLA Office to ensure the transfer is completed as quickly and accurately as possible. This will save you the time and any personal costs that you would incur if you completed the transfer yourself, at your nearest vehicle office.
