you select this option you are choosing to complete the

Tip |
The busiest times of the
working week are Monday and Friday mornings when you
will normally find queues.
It's also a good idea to avoid the few days at the
beginning and the end of the month when there's always
a rush for new tax discs.
Please allow plenty of time for your visit, just in
case. Before you go please remember that for the transfer
to be allowed your vehicle must have a valid (current)
tax (license) disc and
if it needs an MOT certificate, this certificate
must also be up to date. |
You will need to take the following documents with you
1 The V5C registration document or 'Logbook', (original
& whole) or V5C/2 New Keepers supplement (green slip)
if you have recently bought the vehicle.
Tip |
If you have just bought
a used vehicle then read on...
If more than 10 days have passed since you bought
the vehicle and you still haven't received your new
V5C then you should wait for it to come as it is already
on its way to you and the V5C/2 New Keepers supplement
(green slip) won't then be valid any longer.
If you bought it within the last 10 days and then
you should be able to use it to carry out the
transfer |
If you have just taken collection of a brand new vehicle....
Your new V5C should arrive within 14 to 28 days so please
wait for its arrival.
2 If your vehicle is more than 3 years old then you need a valid
MOT (original) certificate
3 A photocopy of your present tax disc, clearly showing your present
vehicle's registration mark and the tax expiry date.
4 Your V750 Certificate of Entitlement to your new registration
mark which you have completed with the details of your present
registration
mark, the validation character shown on your V5C and the
tax disc expiry date.
Tip |
Full instructions
are shown on the back of the certificate which
will have been authorised by us. |
Your transfer will be completed while you wait and you will be
handed back
1 A replacement tax disc with the same expiry date as your old
one but showing your new registration mark
2 Your MOT certificate with your old registration mark changed
to show your new one
3 A V948 certificate which authorises the holder to get
the number (license) plates made up.
This certificate lists the forms of identification that
will need to be shown when you get your new plates made
up eg Passport or Photo
Driving License
You can now go to a reputable car dealer or motor accessory shop
to get your new number plates made while you wait.
Frequently asked questions and answers for DIY transfers
Do I have to do my transfer straight away?
No, your V750 Certificate of entitlement to your new registration
mark is valid for 12 months and can be renewed on the eleventh
month
by payment of a government certification fee (presently
£25) and an administration fee, presently £25.00.
You can therefore do your
transfer in many years time if you wish, making a private number
plate the ideal gift for a young son or daughter.
Do I have to pay any more money?
No, your V750 Certificate of entitlement has the £80 government
transfer (assignment) fee already paid but you mustn't let
it expire
or you risk losing your rights to your new registration
mark.
Also once you have completed your transfer then there are
no ongoing charges for owning a personal number plate.
The only thing you need to buy is a pair of number plates
which you can purchase for £20 when you place
your order.
What happens when I change my vehicle?
You can pay the government transfer fee, presently £80
to transfer your number plate to your next vehicle provided
that:-
1 Both vehicles are taxed, and tested (if MOT's are required)
2 Your number plate doesn't make your next vehicle look
younger than it actually is- This is a Golden rule for
all transfers.
Tip |
If you've saved your old
number plates then you can ask if your previous registration
mark can be re-instated to
the vehicle you are selling. So long as your old
registration is still on the government register
then this request is normally granted. |
Do I have to pay any more money to get my old plate back or a
replacement plate for the car I'm selling?
No, the government transfer fee of £80 covers this too. You
will have to get a pair of number plates to show the replacement
registration mark allocated to your vehicle.
What if my vehicle is
registered with the DVLNI in Northern Ireland?
The certificate you will be issued with relates to a United Kingdom
Mainland registration mark.
This mark cannot be transferred directly to a Northern Ireland registered
vehicle.
Therefore you must give us the name of the Registered Keeper of
a UK mainland vehicle
of the correct age to accept the registration mark in the
first transfer.
It must be firstly assigned to a vehicle registered with
DVLA Swansea and once that assignment has been completed
and the updated V5 .
registration document has been returned to the keeper of
the vehicle, the keeper may apply for a transfer through
a mainland Vehicle Registration
Office for a transfer to a vehicle registered in Northern Ireland.
You will be required to pay an additional Government transfer
fee (presently £80) and will have to trust the keeper
to carry out this transfer for you,
as the rights to the registration mark will have become theirs during
the first assignment.
If you are the keeper of vehicles in Northern Ireland and the
mainland(or have trustworthy friends or family with mainland
registered vehicles) of the
right ages to accept the registration mark, then this is
the procedure necessary. We must stress that we can only
assist you in the first transfer
to a Mainland registered vehicle.
Our Full Transfer service which is available for a small supplement
of £25.00 takes care of all the transfer procedures for you.
